FACS 241 : Architectural Drafting

My Work

Presented below are various projects I have spent ample time completing during my time as a student Interior Designer at Liberty University. This page displays specific projects from FACS 241, Architectural Drafting.

01 Building Section

The objective of this assignment was to demonstrate the skills needed to create a multilevel building section. This was achieved through the usage of a variety of line weights. Various marker mediums, vellum paper, a drafting table, and a triangular scale contributed to this project.

Wall Detail

The goal of this assignment was to demonstrate the ability to use a variety of line weights, construction elements and lettering. This was done through the creation of a detailed wall interior. A rotary lead pencil was used in order to achieve sharp, distinct line weights. A triangular scale ruler was also used for straight lines.

ADA Floor Plan

ADA compliant floor plan with measurements, symbols & construction elements

It is important for interior designers and builders to know and be capable of designing ADA compliant floor plans. This assignment required creating two ADA restrooms (one male and one female) within specific parameters while also including specific features including a baby changing station, two to three stalls and at least two sinks. This was achieved through the usage of vellum, various weighted drafting pencils, a triangular scale, drafting table and various stencils. Labels were made using 1/4" and 1/8" lettering scale requirements.

Residential Project
- Palmer Family Apartment

Palmer Residential Project cover sheet. Demonstrates lettering, line weights & usage of symbols.

The cover sheet of the Palmer Family Residential Project, demonstrates many important skills needed for mastering drafting in interior design. Lettering is the most obvious as the sheet contains labels and letters in various sizes and line weights. Various line weights both thick and thin are represented as well. Construction elements and symbols are also shown. These things were all obtained through the use of vellum paper, a rotary lead pencil containing various lead weights, and a triangular scale ruler.

The cover page as well as the other parts of the project displayed below, each contain a title block which demonstrates the use of lettering and line weights.

Residential Project : Demo Plan

This was the first step of the residential project. Using the dimensions provided and a copy of the general floor plan, this demo plan was created showing dashed construction lines. These lines indicate the walls and sections of the floor plan that would be removed in hopes of expanding space and creating a more open floor plan for the Palmers.

The Palmers specifically desired to open up the kitchen and change the study to a second bedroom. WIndows and doors would be replaced as well.

The next step in the residential project after removing the no longer desired walls, was to add walls for the new renovations. In my personal plan, I created a U-shaped kitchen and moved the washer and dryer into the closet while also expanding the closet. I also converted the study into a second bedroom which also includes a closet. This floor plan also includes elevation tags and symbols so that it is easy to see which elevation and schedule they belong to.

Furniture and more specific labels were also added to give the Palmers a more realistic feel for what their new design would look like.

Residential Project: Reflected Ceiling Plan

Palmer Residential Project reflected ceiling plan

The goal of this phase of the residential project was to show the Palmers what kind of lighting they would need and how the switches would be placed within the plan. A variety of lights including basic recessed can lights, wall sconces and chandeliers are shown. Ceiling fans with lights are also included in the plan as well as the switches that will connect to the fixtures.

Residential Project : Elevations

The elevations were created with the intention of showing the Palmers what each section of their new kitchen would look like. Three elevations were drafted and presented in order to cover each side of U-shaped kitchen. Appliances, fixtures and hardware were included to make it look as realistic as possible. A variety of line weights were created through the usage of a rotary lead pencil and a triangular scale ruler. Symbols and construction elements were also included using these tools as well as stencils. Lastly, lettering is well represented as the majority of elements in each elevation is labeled.

Residential Project : Sections and Details

The sections and details part describes exactly what it says, as it shows the detailed sections of both base and upper wall cabinets. Specific features such as, pull-out drawers, a trash can base cabinet and silver hardware are all easily labeled on this plan to help the Palmers visualize what things will look like in their kitchen.

Residential Project : Schedules

Line weights, symbols and lettering are shown here.

The last part of the Palmer residential project is the schedules. Schedules consist of the doors and windows included in a plan. In this case, all doors and windows will be replaced. Due to being limited on window space and to keep things simple, the Palmers will have single-hung windows, wooden interior doors and front door with window frames to add a little detail and character.
