FACS 200 : Interior Design I
My Work
Presented below are various projects I have spent ample time completing during my time as a student Interior Designer at Liberty University. This page displays specific projects from FACS 200, Interior Design I.

Coffee Shop mind map

Coffee Shop : Mind Map
The first step of the design process is programming. Ideas are generated through a process called mind mapping. Mind mapping is simply organizing a variety of ideas on paper in order to determine what the client desires. In this case, a coffee shop was being created so a mind map was made in order to brainstorm all the possible desires a coffee shop would need to have.
02
Coffee Shop : Adjacency Matrix
Next, an adjacency matrix is created. This was constructed based upon the mind map. shown above. The goal was to apply the basic ideas from mind mapping to create a general plan of how the coffee shop would be laid out. An adjacency matrix shows which areas would be adjacent to each other.

Coffee Shop : Bubble Diagram
The last step of the idea generating process is the bubble diagram. This was constructed in accordance with the adjacency matrix. This diagram gives a general idea of what potential layouts of the coffee shop would look like. This also gives the client an idea of where they would like things to be placed such as a condiment bar near the kitchen for easy access.

Group Project 1 : Theory in Action
The goal of the first group project was to create a moving display that demonstrates the Gestalt Theory. The Gestalt theory is a psychological description of perception meaning the entirety of anything is greater than the sum of its individual parts. The project demonstrates similarity, unity, perceived movement and repetition. Each of these elements was achieved through the creation of origami paper birds. The birds were then strung together with fishing line and hung from PVC pipe.

Group Project 2 : Theory as an Experience
The objective of the second project was to invite viewers to engage in Meaning of Place Theory. This theory has three categories all of which are explained through the psychological, sociological and physiological needs that we have as humans. This theory is also applicable to Interior Design as it specifically contains Place identity, sense of place and place attachment which are the three main factors of the Meaning of Place Theory. For this project, the theme of Paris, France was recreated as it is very popular for tourists to find a sense of identity and attachment to. Icons representing the Eiffel Tower, french cafes and greenery with lights were all used to recreate a dining scene near the Eiffel Tower in Paris.

Final Project : Theory Applied to Design

Final project : dining room & office
Overall view of final project : dining room, office & grass space.
Office space
The objective of this final project was to design a three dimensional model that would demonstrate how Change Theory applies to interior design. Change Theory occurs whenever something majorly impacts an environment or populated space, causing it to change. The Covid-19 pandemic greatly impacted businesses everywhere but specifically the interior design industry so the goal of this project was to research an article with recommendations from designers on how to adapt to these changes. The article I specifically read suggested having a separate space for work such as an office or dining room table, as well as including windows for natural light and fresh air. Both spaces were created using cardboard, foam core, scrapbook paper and various fabric samples. A chair and a desk were placed in the office (shown on the right side of the model) for work to be done and a couch with a rug and throw pillows were added for a pop of color and sense of comfort. Windows were cut out of both the office and dining room walls. Spending time outside and breathing in fresh air was also recommended so I included green grass patterned scrapbook paper to represent this as well. Lastly, floor samples were included to represent a more realistic hardwood flooring in both spaces.

The design process is the first and arguably most important phase of an interior design project. This phase allows the designer to pull all of their ideas as well as the clients together and determine the next steps. for the project.

Mind map created for Paris (Group Project 2)

In the second photo, the assembly of the Paris themed display is being created. Foam core and poster board were used to create the base and walls. Green fabric paper was used to portray a lawn and grass patterned patio. Mini furniture and figurines were bought to represent the icons of Paris specifically the Eiffel Tower, cafe, dining area, baguettes and greenery with lights. All of these items were assembled using E6000 and hot glue.
